Bethany began orthodontic treatment at age 14 for a severe underbite with significant crowding and a narrow arch. She also had an open bite, which means there was open space between her upper and lower teeth when her jaw was closed. These types of cases are typically among the most difficult to treat and often require surgery. Bethany relied on the Damon System instead of traditional braces for her treatment.

The light pressure used in the Damon System stimulates broad, natural arch development and typically delivers results up to 25 percent faster than traditional braces, according to clinical studies. While traditional braces require elastic ties to hold wires in place, these ties can accumulate bacteria and often require "tightening" that can hinder tooth movement and prolong treatment.

Bovie Bucks

While you are waiting for the right time to get your braces, you will be
coming back at regular intervals, usually every six months for Dr. Bovenizer,
“Dr. Bo”, to check your teeth. This will help him to determine when the very
best time will be for you to begin your orthodontic treatment.

Slow Down and Experience the Real Meaning of the Holiday Season

Amazingly, the holidays are upon us again. It feels as though this time of year comes so fast, turns our lives upside down and is over before we know it. Sometimes it’s hard to be fully present in the moment when we’re overwhelmed and stressed about gift giving, tons of parties to attend, and juggling our families through it all. It helps to step back and take it all in. Slow Down and enjoy the holidays.
Giving is better than receiving…
Make time for others. The good deeds you do will not only help others but really allow you to experience the true meaning of the holidays. Why not volunteer at a soup kitchen, organize a toy drive for underprivileged children or even make time at your child’s school for fun activities? Even simple gestures like baking cookies for your elderly neighbors or inviting those without families to visit during the holidays can be ways to give to others what they would have missed this year.

Peace on earth…
Do you and your neighbor have an ongoing feud concerning your property line or an overgrown tree? Do you not really know your neighbors at all because you work crazy hours? Haven’t seen the in laws in some time, and you’re sort of happy about that? Make the extra effort. Shovel your neighbor’s driveway as a peace offering. Introduce yourself to your new neighbors with a gift of cigars or homemade brownies. Extend the olive branch and offer to host at your home this year. Realize that you are also an x-factor that can change your relationships.
Goodwill toward man…
Spread the good cheer! A positive attitude in your professional and personal life can definitely bring out the best in people. Make the extra effort to find the positive angle in situations that may not appear to be so great. Involve your family and coworkers in decision making. Find what it is that they want to do and attempt to incorporate it into “the plan.” If your workmate feels that his approach toward a client or situation might be the best way, let him try before (or even IF) you need to use your own approach. Have your children decide on, and then plan for, a family outing. Enjoy spending time together and focus on just being with them, rather than whatever is on your holiday to-do list!.
Let it snow…
Stock up your cupboards with the fixings for holiday treats and cocoa. Enjoy the season… enjoy the snow and the early evenings. Go sledding and skating… warm up in front of the fire, and spend time with those that you love. Pull out the seasonal favorites: It’s a Wonderful Life, A Christmas Carol, The Santa Clause… plan a movie night with your spouse or even the whole family! Pop popcorn, have a few hot toddies… find simple reasons to enjoy the season!
There’s No Place Like Home…
For the holidays, make an effort to get together with loved ones, near and far. Sure, the traffic might be terrific and maybe it’s been so long that you’d just as soon stay home. But it’s important to make the effort — especially with family, as they are the roots of who you are and where you came from. Reconnecting with cousins, aunts, uncles, nephews and nieces can be a refreshing and fun alternative to your daily grind.
Slow down and enjoy the holidays. Though they do come once a year… make this year count!

The Holiday Season

The holidays are quickly approaching, and it's our favorite time of the year here at Bovenizer Orthodontics! We just finished up our Halloween Candy Buy Back Program, which was a huge success. All of the candy that we received was sent to our soldiers overseas. Would you know we had collected over 300 pounds with your hard work? Thank you to everyone who helped us collect these sweet treats for our troops!  We are so thankful for our troops and the freedom that we live by provided by their sacrifices.  We are also anxiously awaiting the Thanksgiving and Christmas Holidays.  We will be using this time to make our office a fun and exciting time with decorations and occasional hot cider!  Be on the lookout for some of our year end contests, did you know we are running a contest on facebook now?  We are going to give away a $250 gift card to Southpoint mall to the lucky winner!

Is the doctor a specialist?

Dr. Bo did complete additional training beyond the required dental school.  He completed 3 additional years to receive a master’s in dental science for orthodontics.  He is recognized by the American Association of Orthodontists and limits his practice to braces alone.

Is the doctor board certified?

Dr. Bo did complete the arduous examinations required to become board certified in his specialty.  This is not required for orthodontists, however Dr. Bo believes it will keep him on the forefront of orthodontics.  He will actually re-certify next year with the American Board of Orthodontics by presenting 6 cases from his practice to a panel of orthodontic peers.

Do you explain all of the treatment options that will pertain to each individual case?

Dr. Bo strives to cover each treatment aspect in its entirety and involves the parents in making the treatment decision.  Each patient is different and sometimes decisions must be made to accommodate that particular case.

Do you speak to the parents at every visit?

Dr. Bo has a treatment conference at the braces placement appointment to outline the treatment after his thorough evaluation.  An assistant will speak to each parent after the appointment to discuss hygiene and what was done that day.  Dr. Bo is always available for any questions.

Is the treatment tailored to each individuals needs?

Dr. Bo completes a treatment plan on each patient.  No one treatment or “cookbook” approach will be used.  Dr. Bo and his staff work very hard to ensure that patients are not treated the same.

Does the doctor place all the brackets himself?

Dr. Bo does place all the brackets himself-No Exceptions!  In fact, he uses an advanced procedure called indirect bonding.  This is where all the braces are placed on a model of the teeth then transferred to the mouth.  It means extreme accuracy, comfort, and we can finish in 1 hour! 

 

 

Are brackets placed on the 12 year molars?

Once the 12 year molars come in, Dr. Bo will place brackets on these teeth.  The 12 year molars are imperative to achieving a properly guided bite.  

 

 

 

How often are Radiographs (X-rays) taken?

Dr. Bo has a digital x-ray machine, which means it is basically a photograph of the teeth and jaws.  It is far less radiation than a traditional machine.  He will routinely take these to ensure treatment is going well.  Every patient will receive additional records in the middle of treatment to allow Dr. Bo to make any changes, if needed, in the treatment plan.  He will discuss these records with the parents or patient.

When Will My Braces Come Off?

One of the most popular questions that an orthodontist will hear, “When are my braces coming off?” 

It does not matter whether you are a teenager or an adult with braces, this question will come up.  I will spend some time discussing the factors that go into your braces staying on and when they may actually come off.  No, we are not trying to punish you!  We are trying to get your teeth in the best possible position and yes you can speed the process up!

Your orthodontist will give you a best guess of your estimated treatment time, however there are variables that will come up and compliance with treatment is one of the largest components of this.  Oral hygiene is a great way to reduce your treatment time.  Keeping your teeth and gums clean will result in a better environment for your teeth to move.  When bleeding gums are present there is a lot of inflammation and teeth actually do not move as well.  Most of you will have an overbite when you begin treatment and almost all will have to wear some sort of rubber bands to correct your bite.  If these are worn as directed, most of the time all day, your bite will be corrected quicker.   

Did you know that it takes your teeth 10 hours of continuous force to move?  That means wearing your elastics for 4 hours then taking it out for 2 and putting it back in does not do anything for you.  That is why your orthodontist keeps telling you month after month to wear your rubber bands!  This can literally take months to complete, when all it should take is one to two months.  The following picture illustrates the bite we are looking for with rubber bands.

NOTE: From the above picture, see how tooth 1 is ahead of teeth 3 and 4 in the OVERBITE photo.  By using rubber bands, we were able to move the teeth to the appropriate position without having to extract any teeth.  See how tooth 1 is located between teeth 3 and 4 in the CORRECTED photo.

So what can you do?  Keep those teeth good and clean, floss daily and use a fluoride rinse and wear your rubber bands as prescribed by the orthodontist and surely your treatment time will shrink.  Give it a try, it will work.
