Why Should You Look For a Board Certified Orthodontist?

.
What is a Board Certified Orthodontist?
An orthodontist is a dentist who has completed an American Dental Association accredited graduate program in the specialty of orthodontics. A dentist who graduates from a specialty program becomes an orthodontic specialist who is eligible to become board certified through the voluntary examination process of The American Board of Orthodontics (ABO). Involvement in the certification process is a demonstration of the orthodontist's pursuit of continued proficiency and excellence.
The certification process involves a thorough Written Examination covering all areas of information on which an orthodontist should be knowledgeable. Successful passage allows the orthodontist to present treated cases which will be evaluated by expert examiners of the Board during a Clinical Examination. Certification is now awarded for a time-limited period and the orthodontist must re-examine on a periodic basis to retain the board certified status.
Identifying a Diplomate of the ABO
Always verify the certifying board when an orthodontist does not provide this information. The ABO is the only certifying board recognized by the American Association of Orthodontists and the American Dental Association. An orthodontist certified by the ABO may use their logos:
Why should I choose an Orthodontic specialist?
It is very important that treatment be done properly as teeth and sometimes faces are changed permanently by orthodontics. A licensed orthodontic specialist is an expert at moving teeth, helping jaws develop properly, and working with you to help make sure the teeth stay in their new positions.
Dr. Bovenizer was certified by the American Board of Orthodontics in 2006 and re-certified by taking another optional clinical exam in 2010.

The Importance of Mouthguards

If you participate in an organized sport or recreational activity, there is a risk to injury of the mouth and that the American Dental Association (ADA) recommends that a mouthguard be worn to reduce the risk.

While most people will not encounter a slap shot of 100 miles per hour like a professional hockey player, acute dental injuries can occur when least expected.  In many situations, a mouthguard can reduce the incidence and severity of a dental injury.  A properly fitted mouthguard will cushion the blow and prevent more the likelihood hood of broken teeth, injuries to lips, tongues, lips, face and jaw.

While custom mouthguards made by your dentist are considered the most protected option, other options can be effective as well such as the mouth formed "boil and bite" type.  If you are in braces, the best option is from Shock Doctor.  Shock Doctor has a couple of options that can cover the upper teeth as well as both upper and lower. Patients can seek the assistance of a dentist to ensure proper mouthguard thickness and adequate protection in critical areas, based on the sporting activity.

When Should Children Have Early Orthodontic Treatment?

Here at Bovenizer Orthodontics, we like to take a conservative approach on treatment.  In most cases, the optimal time is when all the permanent are in including twelve year molars.  This keeps our patients from being in treatment longer than necessary.  However, there are times when early treatment is beneficial for young children.
The American Association of Orthodontics recommends that children be seen by the age of 7 or when the first signs of early orthodontic problems occur.  Early evaluation can detect problems and allows better planning for more effective treatment in hopes of preventing more serious problems later.
Early orthodontic treatment is effective and desirable in certain situations.  Some of the problems which do require early orthodontic treatment include:
·         Creating room for crowded, erupting teeth
·         Creating facial symmetry through influencing jaw growth
·         Reducing the risk of trauma to protruding  teeth
·         Preserving space for unerupted teeth
·         Reducing the need for tooth removal
·         Reducing treatment time in braces
Orthodontics is not solely for the aesthetic improvement of the teeth.  Orthodontics is also used for tooth and jaw misalignment.  These “malocclusions” affect how you chew and clean your teeth as well as how you feel about your smile.  While orthodontics can create a more aesthetically pleasing smile, it also creates a healthier one that will be easier to maintain in life.

Why Use AdvanSync Over a Traditional Herbst?

AdvanSync (Half the size of the Herbst and Forsus
Why use it?
One of the most common concerns orthodontists treat is the discrepancy that occurs when the upper teeth protrude beyond the lower.  Ordinarily when we see a patient with the upper teeth protruding, we tend to think that the upper jaw and teeth are too far forward: but more often than not, this condition is due to a small lower jaw that is further back than it should be.  With these patients, we would like to encourage the lower jaw to catch up in growth, and braces with the AdvaSync appliance help this happen.

What is it?
The AdvanSync (Made by Ormco) appliance is a non-removable appliance that is used in adolescents that have a small or posteriorly positioned lower jaw.  The appliance is used to encourage the lower jaw to come forward during the adolescent growth spurt as well as providing dental changes to move the lower teeth forward.  It is cemented to the upper and lower molars, connecting the jaws together in a way that keeps the lower jaw in a more forward position.  The AdvanSync needs to be in place for 6-9 months if skeletal jaw changes are desired.  In all cases, braces are placed on the teeth at the same time as the AdvanSync, allowing us to treat patients more efficiently and thus limiting the total treatment time in braces

Herbst
 What does it look like?
Unlike headgear the AdvanSync is hidden inside the back of the mouth and is virtually unnoticeable.  Unlike similar appliances (such as the Herbst appliance and Forsus appliance), the AdvanSync is half the size of theses for maximum patient comfort and range of motion.  It can be seen when a patient opens their mouth wide, but it does not come out of the mouth.  In many patients, the AdvanSync immediately improves their appearance from a profile (side) view, in that it moves the lower jaw (and therefore the chin) forward.

Will it be uncomfortable?
The first two weeks with AdvancSync in place is challenging for the patient.  It is something that takes time getting used to.  Patients will not feel discomfort, but rather have to adjust  to the appliance and the new position of their jaws.  The feeling is similar to what is felt when one moves their lower jaw forward so that the edges of the bottom front teeth hit the edges of the top
front teeth.  Patients can eat normally with the AdvancSync in place.
